Bakewells Fridge Jug – Unbranded – Found at Market for $4 twice
I picked this blue jug up for $4 at a market in May 2017 because I love blue, it had a lovely smooth feel and a great recessed handle. Last month I found out that it is an early Bakewell Brothers jug made in Sydney. I was totally chuffed because I am a Bakewells collector. I now have a Bakewells Fridge Jug.
A member of the Bakewell family with the same jug in green, which she calls a ‘fridge jug’, was able to confirm that this was indeed a Bakewells jug. They had produced unbranded items and items just with stickers (which would wear off).
I was doubly pleased with this because my instinct, that it was an old and desirable jug, was correct, and on top this it is a Bakewells.
Can you imagine my pleasure when last week I found another smaller jug the same at the same market for $4. This cream jug is also unbranded and it is hand-painted under the glaze. I was aware that Bakewells produced some intricately hand-painted pieces but this is the first I have found, and the only one I have seen with such a simple floral motif.
So my Bakewells collection is extended by two pieces.. two Bakewells Fridge Jugs (unbranded).
